An Inductive Leap Too Far

In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the character Katniss Everdeen is a very strong main character and is a turning point in the plot multiple times throughout the book and series. For example, at the beginning of the book Katniss is put in the position of the care-taker of her family after her father's death in the coal mines. She has learned to hunt and has grown very useful skills throughout this time of despair illegally but it was called for. Just barely surviving as it was, The Hunger Games had come around again for yet another year of "entertainment". In the square where the tributes are being called (the reaping), Katniss' little sister is called as tribute. She is torn between the choice of taking her sister's place as a tribute and risking her own life or staying home and staying alive. (This is the inductive leap) After Katniss pondered this for a moment she had made her decision." "I volunteer!" I gasp. "I volunteer as tribute!" " (Collins, 22) She was then accepted to take her sister's place as tribute (a first in the history of the Hunger Games) to the Hunger Games and was joined by Peeta Mellark as the male tribute. Both scared for their safety and what will become of them, they are taken away. Closer to the end of the book there is another twist in the plot line that is caused by both Peeta and Katniss but is more strongly provoked and encouraged by Katniss. She had gathered some Nightlock berries, which are extremely poisonous berries to humans, along her way through the Hunger Games. When it's left between herself and Peeta and they have to make the choice of who is going to have to die neither of them can live w/ the fact that one will have to kill the other and go home alone. So Katniss remebers the pouch full of nightlock and creats a plan to trick the games keepers. (This is another inductive leap) " "Hold them out. I want everyone to see," he says. I spread out my fingers, and the dark berries glisten in the sun. I give Peeta's hand one last squeeze as a signal, as a good-bye, and we begin counting. "One." Maybe I'm wrong. "Two." Maybe they don't care if we both die. "Three!" It's too late to change my mind.I lift my hand to my mouth, taking one last look at the world. The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare." " Katniss' plan worked, Peeta and herself spit the berries out after they are announced as the first not one but two victors of District 12 to win the Hunger Games ever in the history of the Hunger Games! This is a huge turning point for the entire trilogy! This action has caused a revolt against the Capitol and has created alot of trouble to for Katniss, Peeta, the Districts and other characters who are introduced in the other books of the trilogy.
